Rock Band Song Review: Week of 6.18.09

So the marketplace had some extra difficulties beyond the scheduled downtime which caused the songs to only show up a few hours ago. The songs in question are 3 Evanescence tunes (!) and 4 Spinal Tap jams, all of which are great SONGS and should probably be purchased on that alone. But that's not what we rate here...

All ratings out of 5.

"Bring Me To Life" - Evanescence

Chords, chords, CHORDS. And they're not of a fun tempo at all. Blah, and it's such a great song too.

"Call Me When You're Sober" - Evanescence

Despite a fun (but super short) hammer-on, pull-off section to start out with, the same old, weird chords that just don't feel right. Not great (and a shitty choice for the band. THEY SHOULD HAVE CONSULTED MY EXPERTNESS).

"Weight of the World" - Evanescence

The solo is over quick and, yes, there's chords. But the solo is also bomb, the song is great and the chord section is a bit of jaw-dropping rapid fire charting.

"Saucy Jack" - Spinal Tap

WTF was that? I could barely hear the guitar I was playing. Instant disconnect.

"Back From the Dead" - Spinal Tap

Great song, fairly easy going with a cool start until the solo hits. Save the star power for the best solo in recent memory. Jesus.

"Rock 'n Roll Nightmare" - Spinal Tap

Too long and drawn out for my tastes. And they do an off beat thing too that I am kind of baffled by. I'm having an off week, perhaps?

"Warmer Than Hell" - Spinal Tap

Meh. Samey chords and kinda dull.

Roundup

  • Buy: Weight of the World, Back From the Dead
  • Fans Consider: nothing really. Maybe Bring Me to Life for the vocals.
  • Avoid: Bring Me to Life, Call Me When You're Sober, Saucy Jack, Rock 'n Roll Nightmare, Warmer Than Hell
Song of the Week: "Back From the Dead"bftd

Not the best week EVAR but the tunes themselves are really worthy and some of the charts are more than worth your time. This one more than the others, clearly.

I think it's time for some totally obscure indie group that I would splooge my pants over to make it here. Like Wavves or Hollerado...

It'll probably be more Smashing Pumpkins.
